Geometry 2nd Quarter Project

For your 2nd quarter project you may choose to do Curve Stitching or you may do a paper about a famous mathematician.

MATHEMATICIAN PAPER

Project Requirements:

          1.  You must submit your chosen mathematicians name by December 2, 2005.

          2.  Three references or sources are required and must be correctly cited.

          3.  A rough draft is due by December 9, 2005.

          4.  The paper should be at least 3 full pages in length.  Typed, double-spaced,            maximum font size of 14.

          5.  A title page.

          6.  A “Works Cited” page. (List your sources using APA style)

          7.  Paper is due on December 16, 2005.

Topic of Paper

          1.  Life of the person.  Birth, education, early years, later years, contributions                    to mathematics, death.

          2.  Social and historical context of their time period and how it influenced                          them and how they influenced society and/or history, in their own time             period or hundreds of years later.

Grading

The paper is worth 50 points.  It should meet all above requirements.

CURVE STITCHING

Curve stitching involves using straight lines to create curves.  You can create parabolas, circles, hyperbolas, and other curves with curve stitching.  You may use a variety of materials to create your design, so do not feel limited to needle and thread.

Materials:

Sewing:  needle, scissors, embroidery floss, file folder or other appropriately           stiff backing material

Wood:  piece of solid wood, fiberboard, or plywood, small nails, copper or plain                   wire, hammer, pliers

Bicycle rim:  bicycle rim, copper or plain wire or narrow rope, pliers

          Other???

Project Requirements:

          1.  Submit a sketch/description of your idea and chosen materials by     December 2, 2005.

          2.  After your project is complete, write a summary describing your      reflections on the project.  Include what you liked and disliked and also how it         may or may not have helped make geometry more real to you.  What did you       learn ?

          3.  Completed project and summary is due December 16, 2005.

Grading Guidelines:

Designs will be graded based upon:

          1.  Correctness – Is the finished product correctly done?

                   (12 points)

          2.  Use of color – Were colors chosen with a purpose and is the overall effect           (7 points)          pleasing to look at?

          3.  Neatness – Is the work neatly completed so that no marks show on the                            (7points)      front of the project?

Are the threads/wires tight but not overly so that the backing                               bends?

          4.  Creativity – Did you vary the design given? (size, angles, etc.)

(7 points)     What is the purpose of the final project?  Art, decoration,                                       bookmark, picture frame, etc.

          5.  Complexity – Was a simple design or a complex design chosen?

                   (7 points)

The reflective summary will be worth 10 points.

The entire project is worth 50 points.
