Music Appreciation
Music Appreciation is a semester course designed to study the
evolution of Western Music.
J.S. Bach We begin at about 450 A.D. with plain song.  The class structure moves through the material by music period.  Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th Century.  Course work includes significant historical events that impact music in each period.  Instructional materials include handouts and class lecture.  Students regularly listen to samples of music from each period. As the semester progresses students will eventually be able to identify samples of music by their characteristics and period.  Students will be introduced to various styles of music, including but not limited to instrumental, vocal, electronic, and chance music.  Time allowing, the class will introduce students to Jazz, World Music and Rock.  Assignments will include reading, critique, music identification. 

Semester:
Music Appreciation is offered every year depending on enrollment in the class.  The length of the class is one semester.

Activities:
Reading, highlighting, listening, critical listening, open class discussion, writing & period identification.
Grading:

This course follows the student attendance policy for finals.
Recommendation:
This class is designed for any high school student.  It is recommended that students wait until at least their sophomore year to take this course.
