The Color Gurad is the part of our
marching band that combines choreographed movement with the color
of the uniform and flag to add to the impact of the "show". We
often refer to the Color Guard as the "Guard" or "Silks" (refering to
the flag). The history of the color guard is rich. It began
in the military with ancient generals using banners of color to
identify a smaller unit of an army. Even to this day military
units design and proudly display unique logos and flag patterns to
identify their unit. Before flags were incorporated in the modern
marching band they were used to "guard" the colors (the national flag
and state flag) by placing armed soldiers on each side of these
flags. For a period of time each marching band (even high school
units) were required to "present the colors" as a part of their show
and "post the colors" at the front of the field at some point of their
show. Today the role of the color guard has changed and is an
integral active part of our new marching band. |
|
| As part of the band the guard will
march in our pre-game and halftime show adding excitement and interest
to our presentation. We will be using different flag colors,
shapes and flag work to or drill and music. At present we plan 4
flag changes during our show. |

All students are welcome to tryout for
Color Guard. A workshop is set for a week in the month of April. We will teach you all the skills you will need. At the conclusion of our workshop we will have an audition. The size of the guard will be 16 or score of 70 in the audition. The color guard is open to 7th grade through high school. |
|
| All color guard members will have
to attend the Band Week sessions. During Band Week we will learn
the "work" (flag routines) and drill (marching assignments).
Unlike the hornline, (wind instruments) drumline (marching percussion)
and pit (non-marching percussion) the color guard will practice after
school twice a week once school starts. |
